Styling your photo session doesn’t have to be stressful. With a few thoughtful choices, you can feel confident, comfortable, and totally photo-ready. Here are my top 5 tips to make choosing outfits easy and enjoyable:
1. Start with Mom, Then Build Around Her
Begin with mom’s outfit—it sets the tone for the entire look. A soft, flowy dress in a neutral or muted tone (like cream, dusty rose, or sage) photographs beautifully and adds natural movement. Once mom’s outfit is chosen, build the rest of the family around it.
For kids, choose simple pieces in complementary colors—like a linen romper or dress for girls and a knit henley or button-up for boys. Stick to soft tones and subtle patterns.
For dad, go with something relaxed but polished—like a cream or light blue shirt with khaki or gray chinos. Keep it simple and neutral to tie everything together.
2. Add Texture and Layers
Textures photograph beautifully—think cotton, linen, knits, and flowy fabrics. Layers like cardigans, scarves, or accessories add visual interest without overwhelming the photo. Soft textures help your images feel cozy, timeless, and natural.
3. Choose Comfort First
Comfort makes all the difference. Clothes should fit well and allow everyone (especially kids!) to move easily. If you’re comfortable, you’ll be more relaxed—and genuine smiles and connection come through so much more easily.
4. Don’t Be Afraid to Dress It Up
This is a special moment worth celebrating! Flowy dresses, dressy jumpsuits, button-ups, or even barefoot in a field—it doesn’t have to feel formal, but choosing outfits that feel a little elevated helps your session feel intentional and timeless.
5. Consider Professional Hair & Makeup
Having your hair and makeup professionally done can take the stress off your plate and give you a little extra confidence. It doesn’t need to be dramatic—just a soft, natural enhancement goes a long way in helping you feel your best in front of the camera.
